TRAVEL TIPS

New Zealand road rules follow international standards. New Zealand drives on the left side of the road (the same as in the UK and Japan, and opposite to the USA and Europe).

Payment:
  • Cash is accepted everywhere (NZ$ - US$/UK? are not often accepted as cash).
  • EFTPOS, using a cash card, is the method almost everyone uses to pay for things in NZ.
  • In New Zealand Credit cards are accepted in most places and are very handy to have.

GST (Goods & Services Tax) is 15% on all items and services - inclusive although some hotels and restaurants may quote prices excluding GST.

Mobile phones are often called cell phones in NZ. If you have a dual band phone you may take out your sim card, and replace it with a sim card purchased in NZ.

Pay phones are card based; which can be bought from newsagents/dairies.

Bring an international drivers permit in case you need to drive while you are here.
