Wellington Hidden Treasures
Hidden Treasures takes you off the beaten track for an intimate insight into
New Zealand life that few visitors are lucky enough to experience.
Maori art – up close and in person
Meet the Hetet whanau, a renowned family of Maori artists who have built a thriving community around
their art. Their work, both traditional and contemporary, lines the walls of galleries
worldwide and their ancestors include eminent historical figures. They’ll open
their art studio and home to you in a way that will stay with you forever. Discover
why Maori art is inseparable from Maori culture and see first-hand how this family
is taking its creative legacy into the future.
A weaving of past and present
Then journey back more than a century to uncover another inspiring family story
and a fascinating slice of New Zealand’s European history – Experience Stansborough. This boutique mill makes fine wool fabrics for American and European fashion
houses using looms from the 1890s – the only looms of their type still working
commercially in the world. Stansborough has helped bring films like The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia to life with its old-world fabrics, which are available in the onsite store.
Let Barry and Cheryl share their passion with you.
Cutting-edge art and ancient treasures
Top off your tour by visiting TheNewDowse art museum, a true celebration of creativity
and culture. Here, cutting-edge art, ranging from photography to fashion, sits
comfortably alongside Nukutewhatewha, an ancient pataka (Maori storehouse). TheNewDowse
is where you’ll find out what drives New Zealanders to be world-class artists,
designers, and innovators. You can also indulge in some of Wellington’s best coffee
at the museum café.
Hidden Treasures is an experience you’ll feel privileged to have had.
